Stem Cells – The future of hair loss treatment?

Future Treatments, SMP Information
stem cell hair loss

stem cell hair lossOver the past year, there’s been an exciting development in the research of potential hair loss cures. Numerous studies have revealed that stem cells could be a possible successful treatment to not just treat hair loss, but cure it completely. So, how could stem cells help to combat hair loss and is a treatment likely to be available anytime soon?

Scientists discover stem cells within hair follicles can be activated

While the majority of research into stem cell treatments for hair loss have been largely focused on helping to grow new hair in a lab, the latest research has discovered how to activate the stem cells within existing hair follicles.

Researchers from UCLA, have discovered a new technique to activate the hair follicle’s stem cells which causes the hair to start growing. This has provided hope for the development of new hair loss drugs which could work as a cure for alopecia and baldness.

During the research, it was revealed that the metabolism of stem cells within the hair is totally different to the cells within the skin. After changing the metabolic pathway of the hair’s stem cells in mice, the researchers found they had the power to either stop or start the hair growth process.

At the moment, this information is still brand new and extensive trials and tests will need to be conducted to determine how effective stem cell treatment could be. So, if it can be used to find a cure it won’t be available for some time.

What current treatments are available?

There is no cure for baldness right now, but there are great, effective treatments available. For those suffering with severe balding, scalp micrompigmentation (SMP) and hair transplants can be a great option. Both offer long-lasting results and have proven to be really effective. However, it’s important to familiarise yourself with the pros and cons before deciding which treatment is right for you.

There’s also a range of treatments available for those suffering from temporary, or mild hair loss conditions. Topical treatments such as Minoxidil can be purchased over the counter and they have shown to provide great results.

Overall, stem cell treatments certainly look promising, but sadly it is likely to be a long time before they are available to the general public. So, if you’re suffering with hair loss, it’s worth visiting a hair specialist to determine the best course of treatment.
