hair loss epidemicNew research has worryingly shown that more men than ever before are turning to drink and drugs to mask their depression and anxiety over hair loss. Young men in particularly are more likely to turn to substances in order to deal with the issue.

Here, we’ll look at why hair loss is contributing to a hidden epidemic and the options men have in terms of successful treatments.

Why are men turning to alcohol and drugs?

The revelation that many men are turning to drugs and alcohol to hide from their hair loss was revealed by a recent survey commissioned by Asda Pharmacy. It surveyed over 2000 men, with 41% admitting they would rather lose the sight in one eye, or even their homes, rather than their hair.

Four out of ten participants also said they experienced depression due to hair loss. It’s the depression which causes some of these men to seek solace in alcohol and drugs. The depression often causes men to isolate themselves and many respondents reported their social and romantic lives had been negatively affected.  Many are also unaware of the treatments which are available these days.

Understanding the treatment options available

There’s a lot of effective treatments currently available for hair loss. First, it’s important to get to the root cause of the problem before a treatment plan can be started as there’s a surprising amount of potential causes and each requires a different type of treatment.

The most common treatments on offer include Minoxidil for mild to moderate hair loss. This is a topical treatment which is applied directly onto the scalp. As an option it’s best used on either temporary hair loss conditions or as a preventative option before a more permanent treatment can be provided.

SMP and hair transplants are the two best long-term hair loss treatments and are especially ideal for severe hair loss.  To find out more about these procedures please give us a call to arrange a free consultation on 0121 516 1767
