Everything you need to know about hair transplants

Everything you need to know about hair transplantsIf you’re considering undergoing a hair transplant, or perhaps know someone else who is serious about the procedure, you’ll most likely have a couple of unanswered questions. The following short guide outlines the key points about hair transplants everyone should be aware of.

The surgery

Firstly the cost tends to come down to three main factors; the location of the clinic, the repute of the hair transplant surgeon and the size of the treatment area. Together these variants can decide on not just the cost, but also the quality of the results. Essentially, you get what you pay for therefore it makes sense to do your research and be informed before you go under the knife.

If your surgeon is inexperienced, or the equipment and technique used are outdated, you run a high risk of something going wrong during the procedure. Ensure you do thorough homework and background checks on the clinic and doctor before making a final decision.

The surgery itself is surprisingly pain-free – there may be slight discomfort from having to sit still for long periods of time, however anaesthetic is locally applied before the procedure, so you won’t be able to feel any needles. The follicular unit transplant (FUT) method does leave some scarring on the scalp from the donor site, however it can be easily concealed under hair growth.

Recovery time after the operation is simply a few days; the scalp may initially appear red and obvious as you are required to shave the area for the ideal surgical environment. Experts suggest you avoid over-exerting and sweating for the first ten days post-operation to allow the scalp to heal.

Results

Hair growth is an extremely slow process which is part of a normal hair growth cycle; therefore results can take up to four months to be visible. Some patients say it has taken them up to one year post-operation to fully see the results, although the results are permanent as the hair follicles which are chosen for transplantation are resistant to hair fall.
