hair loss showerHair loss is a common condition which affects many men in the UK, often the root cause of hair fall can be put down to genetics, however did you know that your grooming routine could also be to blame?

Currently it is estimated that the UK has the fifth highest number of balding men in the world. Forty percent of the country’s men are suffering from hair loss, it is thought that ninety five percent of these cases are a result of unfair genetics which cause androgenic alopecia (male pattern baldness). This condition relates male sex hormones to hair fall, yet a study published in JAMA Dermatology claims there is no correlation between male hair loss and testosterone levels.

Causes of hair loss

Other factors behind hair loss and thinning include stress, anaemia, protein deficiencies and low vitamin levels. Some experts suggest that to maintain your head of hair, daily grooming habits should also be paid close attention to.

A quick shower could be one of the unexpected reasons behind losing hair, whereas spending five extra minutes under the water to take the time to massage your scalp as you shampoo, is understood to stimulate blood flow to hair follicles and promote hair growth.

How to correctly massage your scalp

Experts suggest that a scalp massage is done ideally twice a week, with a firm yet consistent pressure applied on the scalp. For the most effective scalp massage, use both your hands and gently knead your scalp starting from the front of the hairline down to the nape of your neck in circular movements. Repeat this process three to four times and conclude with a gentle sweeping action by smoothing your hands over the top of the scalp.

Scalp massages not only promote blood flow and promote hair growth; they can also lower hair loss inducing stress levels. Aim to use a stimulating scalp mask or an organic oil to improve hair growth.

If you find that regular scalp massages along with a healthy diet and lifestyle isn’t improving your hair loss condition, you can consult the treatment list at or speak to a hair loss expert for a professional opinion.
