Research from China suggests male pattern hair loss might be occurring at an earlier age, we take a closer look.

The clientele of HIS Hair Clinic represent the whole gamut of society. We see men and women, young and old. That said, there is a clear attraction for younger men for whom Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) can deliver a profound change in appearance. But we are not in a position to have a view on whether hair loss is affecting these men at a younger age than was previously the case.. in truth, the question has never occurred to us.
Fortunately for us, the question did occur to a team of researchers in China. As reported in China Newsweek magazine a survey was conducted of 4,000 students at Tsinghua University in Beijing. The results can only be be considered anecdotal due to the self-reporting nature of the survey, just the same the results were pretty shocking.
An incredible 60% reported that they were losing significant amounts of hair. 1 in 4 said they were unaware of their hair loss until it had been mentioned to them by family members.
As is so often the case with these surveys some interesting, if slightly nonsensical “facts” got thrown up… The data indicated that students on science, maths or engineering courses were least likely to be suffering with hair loss. While those studying Marxism and art were the most likely.
What The Experts Are Saying
Talking to the South China Morning Post Dr Fu Lanqin, a Peking Dermatologist, said “patients are losing their hair from the age of about 21 or 22, with the condition becoming obvious by 24 or 25. My feeling is that this generation is losing its hair sooner than previous generations.” The article also points to consumer trends as possibly indicating the same issue with shopping website, Tabao, declaring that hair loss products were in its top 40 bestselling lines in 2017 and that under thirties were responsible for 40% of those sales. The startling results from China certainly warrant closer inspection, and further investigation. There are so many modern potential triggers for early hair loss, stress chief among them… though that would not explain why somebody studying maths would do a better job of holding onto their hair than his peer studying art. For us, the consumer trend in China towards young people buying hair loss products is probably explained by a generational shift, away from prioritising food and warmth to other lifestyle product choices. Hair loss probably does not figure on your to do list when you are concentrating on growing enough food to get your family through the winter.
