When was SMP introduced?
SMP is a relatively new procedure and was founded by Ranbir Rai-Watson and Ian Watson in 2002. However, it wasn’t introduced onto the commercial market until 2006. Before the technique was developed, people had actually been experimenting with various head tattoo techniques.
Pigment related treatments date as far back as the 1970’s, though back then the techniques weren’t overly successful. They created more of a shaded effect which was largely used to cover up scars that were left from plug surgeries.
The SMP we know today, was developed after Ian Watson lost his brother to cancer. He himself developed stress related alopecia. He noticed there wasn’t a satisfactory solution available at the time so he set to work trying to create one himself.
What exactly does it do?
As mentioned, SMP is a tattoo technique, but don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s just like a body tattoo. It isn’t. Instead, it uses a very specialised technique to create realistic looking follicles. It doesn’t look like a tattoo once it’s finished; it looks just like your natural hair.
As it is a very precise treatment, it does need to be carried out by a skilled professional. At one time the treatment was only available at Watson’s own HIS clinic, but now it’s available worldwide.
It’s especially well-suited to those who don’t want others to know they’ve had work done. It’s very difficult to spot that the tattooed pigments aren’t real hair. Of course, it does mean you have to be happy to have a shaved head look.
SMP isn’t going to help you get thick, healthy hair – instead it’s more of a cover up procedure that simply looks like real hair.
