Scalp micropigmentation FAQs

Scalp micropigmentation FAQsScalp micro pigmentation (SMP) is a non-invasive, detailed and permanent hair loss solution which is relatively pain-free. Not only is it cost effective, it is hassle free and requires little to no maintenance. The procedure itself simply involves natural pigments being deposited into the dermal layer of the scalp by needle micro-insertion. The end result is an immediate and natural illusion of micro-hairs.

Who will opt for SMP?

Contrary to popular belief, SMP is not just for men who have lost all their hair – it can be even done to add density to those who have thinning hair or receding hairlines. Sometimes, men will opt for SMP alongside a hair transplant for even denser and thicker looking hair. The shaved head is globally considered acceptable in both social and business situations and is arguably considered the most popular hairstyle.

Do you have to shave your head to have SMP?

Not necessarily, SMP can also be used to disguise thinning areas and by having some hair growth on your scalp already, the aesthetician can fill in uneven patches to make the scalp hair look more dense and thick.

How long does the procedure take?

Most clinics will carry out the SMP treatment procedures over a minimum of three sessions when the client is mainly bald. The first session will require deposition of lighter pigments, the second will use darker pigments to add density and build a natural hairline. The last session will be focused on completing a natural and highly detailed overall appearance.

How do you choose the right hairline for you?

Everyone naturally has different shaped hairlines, which is why it can be difficult choosing a SMP hairline to suit you. Clients can opt for a well-defined hairline to give a strong overall look, a soft hairline which gives a natural and subtle look or recreate their original hairline based from old photographs. The experienced SMP aesthetician can help you decide and tailor the final result to your individual requirements.

Will anyone notice my SMP?

Many clients choose not to disclose that they have had an SMP procedure to friends and family, usually for personal reasons and to build confidence. The end result is so natural looking it is unlikely anyone would question it. Aestheticians carefully select pigments that match the shade of your natural hair and create hairlines which can flawlessly blend in with your face.
