Losing Your Hair? Swerve the Gym Advises Surgeon

General Hair Loss, Hair Loss News, Other Topics

In news that will come as a shock to the many men who turn to the gym as a direct response to the first sign of hair loss, a Harley Street surgeon has delivered a direct warning on protein shakes and pumping iron. We take a closer look…

Muscles Are Not The Same As Hair But…

self confident

… they can certainly help you feel better about yourself at what is, for many, a difficult time. Over the years we have spoken to many young men in the early stages of androgenetic alopecia, better known as male pattern hair loss. Joining a gymnasium has been part of the broader, holistic solution for a high percentage of them. It is understandable from so many aspects, hair loss is never welcome but for some it can be debilitating. So closely associated with youth and virility, it’s sudden retreat can trigger genuine emotional problems which in turn can have a profoundly negative effect on every sphere of life. A regular workout is a positive response, it improves the physical appearance and returns some degree of self-confidence – not least it is something that it is possible to control, unlike your hairline.

The Problem With Pumping Iron

pumping iron

From the website of the Daily Express comes a warning from a Harley Street hair transplant surgeon, Dr Thomy Kouremada-Zioga. Dr Kouremada-Zioga told the Express that he has become concerned that upwards of 70% of all the men coming to his clinic go to the gym.

Dr Thomy Kouremada-Zioga points to particular ingredients in the shakes as being the villain of the peace here: “Protein shakes will very often contain growth hormones such as Creatine and DHEA,goo which not only increase muscle mass, but also increase testosterone levels in the bloodstream. As many of you will know, testosterone produces DHT, a build up of which is widely recognised as contributing to hair loss.

So What Can I Do?

what to do

Our heartfelt advice would be, as long as it is a healthy pursuit, to do whatever makes you happy. Maybe it is advisable to source your protein elsewhere from more natural products, but if working out puts a smile on your face then stick with it. The good Doctor’s advice was not that protein shakes cause hair loss… it was that they can accelerate it. Finally, we would point out that a young man who has the resources and appetite to attend an appointment with a Harley Street surgeon is highly likely to be a gym member – it is just possible that the surgeon has a highly skewed statistic on which he has based his theory.
