Cell Growth vs MHT


BBC news is reporting on the progress of a new breakthrough for combating hair loss and it involves growing cells in a lab! Small amounts of existing hair cells on the scalp are taken and are then multiplied in the laboratory; they are then injected into the bald areas on the scalp. The process is known as “follicular cell implantation” and has been developed by UK firm Intercytex. They claim to be able to supply a limitless supply of replacement hair cells. But before you get ahead of yourselves the procedure won’t be properly available for at least five years depending on trials proving its safety and effectiveness.

If you’re wondering how it works – here comes the science part…..doctors extract the dermal papilla cells which are found in the follicle, these cells are responsible for hair growth. Much like traditional methods of hair transportation, the cells are taken from the back of the head (as it usually still has hair growth) and are then bathed in a specially developed chemical in the lab before being placed back in the scalp.

According to Dr. Paul Kemp, Intercytex’s Scientific Officer, the presence of the dermal papilla cells encouraged skin cells to start building new hair follicles. With the ‘basics’ in place, Dr. Kemp believes this method will revolutionise the hair loss industry. But with follicular cell implementation still being in the trial stages it will still take a while to find out the full scope of the benefits of the procedure.
