Going all the way back to the start of recorded history man has been developing new ways to treat hair loss. Little wonder so many of these “cures” live on. We explore these remedies and ask how effective they are…
Early Attempts And Misunderstandings
There are cures for hair loss that have been found in ancient Egyptian papyrus scrolls. Socrates, the Greek philosopher used an incredible concoction that involved pigeon droppings… to be fair, as the man himself put it: “I know that I am intelligent because I know that I know nothing”. One cure even found it’s way into the Bible where the Book of Kings offers us bear grease slapped on the pate.
There were also early educated guesses at the causes of hair loss, which only served to highlight how poor education was. Samuel Johnson, Dr Johnson to his friends, was the man who created the first English dictionary and famed for great quotes, many of which have stood the test of time… “Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel” springs to mind as particularly appropriate in these challenging times. His best guess at the cause of hair loss was “a dry brain”, whatever that might mean. Other, slightly more reasonable, though equally wrong, theories included pollution and dandruff.
Modern Homeopathy
In the late 20th Century an increasing mistrust of large pharmaceutical companies saw a huge re-emergence of traditional cures for a range of illnesses, many of these would be proven to offer some relief by modern science – which had in many cases identified the active ingredient and seen it marketed under FDA approval for its traditional purpose.
The Latest Hair Loss Cure
Each week some very old treatment is offered as the latest way to heal yourself, to return you to a full head of hair with a simple daily application of something… from green tea-leaves to lemon juice to cow saliva. The sad truth is that while some of these, though probably not the bovine spittle, might do the condition of your hair some good (or bad), there is no way they can affect the roots or, more importantly, the follicles – they are simply out of reach.
