A study conducted by The Maitland Clinic has found that when it comes to living without hair, Londoners are the most concerned about hair loss and the Irish are happy to take or leave it.
Nearly a third of men and a fifth of women in London couldn’t bear to live without their hair. Is this just for their own vanity? Not entirely it seems as the research found that almost a quarter of women in London were entirely put off by baldness.
Whilst baldness was frowned upon by many of London’s women, the rest of the UK’s men needn’t be as concerned, as their judgment wasn’t share across the UK. People from the North East and Midlands were far less concerned about a full head of hair.
The Survey
Polling 4000 adults from the UK, the purpose of the study was to gauge their concern about going bald and perceptions about thinning hair. The results showed that hair transplants are becoming more socially acceptable, with over 1/5 of men believing it is ‘completely acceptable for a man to have a hair transplant’. This finding is fortunate for the 30 percent of men in the West Midlands, South West and North West who have a fear of going bald.
The Findings
Dr. Edward Ball, medical director at The Maitland Clinic and a leading hair restoration expert, believes the study shows “as a nation we’re worried about balding, with a quarter of men and one in seven women anxious about losing their hair. It seems that we are more conscious of self-image than ever, particularly with the rise of selfies and social media and its effect on the perception of baldness.”
Male and female pattern baldness remains the most common cause of hair loss in the UK and occurs most commonly during our late 20s and early 30s. Fortunately as technology and techniques improve, hair restoration and hair loss products are becoming more widely available and acceptable.
