If you are concerned about hair loss, or the condition of your scalp, then getting the right tools to help yourself are essential.
Diet Must Haves
It is that time of year when many of us will be returning to some normality in our diet after the excesses of the holiday season. Depending on how wayward your diet became during this period the legacy may well be easily spotted in the form of poor hair and scalp condition. You will only have to cast your mind back to your teenage years to remember the devastating effect bad diet can have on your skin, which is after all the body’s largest organ and deserving of consideration.
A hair conscious diet involves plenty of protein… some high protein foods like beef, eggs, salmon and cottage cheese also come with other important nutrients like zinc and iron which contribute to good scalp and hair health. Vitamins A and C should also be on your shopping list, leafy veg is a bullseye with both present. These vitamins contribute to improved blood circulation which is vital for a healthy scalp.
Watch Those Chemicals
Men and women in a state of anxiety about their hair loss, especially in the early stages, might be found in the shopping aisle among the hair care products. A note of warning then. Do not wash your hair more than once every 2 or 3 days, any more than that and you are doing harm by stripping the hair of oils. Any less and you risk the build up of microscopic fauna on your scalp. If you suffer from extremely oily hair then a daily sulphate-free shampoo is recommended.
Associated with these issues is the use of products that hold your hair in place… also popular with hair loss sufferers who use them to fix remaining hair over the bald area. These chemicals can be difficult to remove with normal washing, if you are a regular user then it is advisable to use a clarifying shampoo once a month to avoid problems quite literally accumulating.
Dandruff
This all too common problem can, if it is allowed to run unchecked, become an issue that affects hair. It is important to use an anti-dandruff shampoo of course but how do you choose from the huge array on offer. The active ingredients to look out for are salicyclic acid, selenium, zinc pyrithione, coal tar, or ketoconazole. Ultimately, if you are not able to manage the condition with products you can buy over the counter, a trip to the doctor is recommended.
