Scalp Condition? Apply Some Ancient Wisdom

General Hair Loss

Conditions affecting the scalp can be extremely uncomfortable, not to mention unsightly. There are no end of treatments on offer but we take a look at some that your Grandmother might have been told about when she was a girl.

Environmental Hazards

Modern living has led to a rise in the number of people presenting with skin problems of all types, some are self-inflicted, over-exposure to harmful UV light from the sun has seen a huge increase in melanomas for example. Other environmental factors are pointed at as the likely cause for many of the other skin conditions, from eczema to rashes, also on the increase – Pollution, diet, household chemicals… a long list of potential triggers, or maybe it is a cocktail of them all, that turns on an unwanted reaction in your body. The result, especially when on the scalp, can be difficult to live with and the symptoms are potentially miserable – Flaky skin exposed to full view that might be itching or burning.

Finding Your Own Answers

There are many potions and balms available for every kind of rash imaginable. As with all medicines it can be a process of trial and error to find the right product, or combination of products, to work in each case. For some the search is in vain and all efforts to remedy the problem are wasted. Before you throw in the towel completely, or indeed if you are yet to start your search, then maybe you should look at this list of five ancient remedies for scalp conditions, of the sort your grandmother may have told you about. Simple and relatively inexpensive procedures that might just make a difference for you:

Olive Oil

Found in most kitchens olive oil has a great reputation for giving health and vitality to hair. You can use standard olive oil but if you have virgin then so much the better. Apply the warm oil directly to the scalp and cover with hot towel before rinsing off after 30 mins.

Peppermint Oil

This can be a salvation for those suffering with rashes – Dilute the oil in some water and massage into scalp, leave for around 30 minutes before rinsing.

Sesame Oil

Ideal for those suffering with a dry scalp – Massage a small amount of undiluted warm oil into the scalp, rinse off after 1 hour.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Although it has more recently gained popularity among keen cooks and, as a consequence, is to be found on many kitchen shelves apple cider vinegar has a well earned reputation for its antiseptic properties. Mix the vinegar with water in equal amounts and apply to scalp – ideally, if you have one, using a spray, leave on for only 15 minutes before rinsing off.

Aloe Vera

Thanks mainly to shampoo manufacturers we are all familiar with aloe vera as something that belongs in the bathroom cabinet. But as well as being a great natural moisturiser it is also used as a healing agent and is very good for an itchy scalp. Buy it in gel form, massage it well into the scalp and leave on for at least an hour prior to rinsing.
