Dr Lu Le has studied cells and genes for over ten years and had been working on an experiment in which he hoped to understand some of the roots of cancer. Accidently yet amazingly, Dr Lu Le ended up discovering something during this experiment which could explain both baldness and grey hairs.
Research findings
Dr Lu Le and his team found the role that a protein known as KROX20 plays in both nerve development and in hair colour and growth. KROX20 can turn on in skin cells which later develop into shafts of hair. These cells can then produce a secondary protein known as Stem Cell Factor (SCF) which is essential for hair colour. Once this SCF protein was deleted from mice in their KROX20 cells, their hair began to turn grey, then white and once the KROX20 was deleted the mice lost their hair.
To confirm his findings from two years ago, Dr Lu Le repeated his experiment to ensure the same results appeared again. He found that every single time, he would consistently get the same results. The results were eventually published in a peer reviewed scientific journal which attracted thousands of readers and news sites around the globe to pick up on the exciting findings.
Although the findings do not guarantee a fool-proof solution to reversing the effects of both hair loss and greying, it does offer some guidance and insight into potential solutions.
