Could a cuppa stop balding in its tracks?

Hair Loss News
coffee

coffeeImagine a world in which balding was so easily banished, simply by drinking a perfectly engineered latte every day. A cappuccino containing precisely the right amount of caffeine – not too much, and not too little – that tastes great and has no adverse effects on the rest of the body.

Wouldn’t that be great? Alas, the latest scientific research that suggests that caffeine may hold the key to the elixir of youth, may not be that simple.

Caffeine – a precise science

The British Journal of Dermatology published a research study which found that a caffeine concentration was able to reverse the effects of testosterone which is the hormone responsible for hair loss in men with male pattern balding. The same study noted that too much of the caffeine concentration can actually have the opposite effect.

Research is in its infancy in this area – until they can work out a concentration that will work in the same way on all its human subjects, the concept is unlikely to hit the mainstream market.

Can’t I just have an espresso?

Not really. According to Dr Adolph Klenk, a German scientist who has been promoting a range of topical products which contain caffeine, the same effects as a product such as his would only be gained by downing 40-50 coffees a day. That’s a whole lot of coffee, and the side effects of that much coffee don’t bear thinking about!

Where can I get hold of a caffeine-based hair treatment?

Your best bet is Minoxidil, which is the only clinically proven product to promote hair growth. Minoxidil now sells a new, high-strength preparation which contains caffeine and Medroxyprogesterone and has enjoyed some good feedback. You could also give Dr Klenk’s product a try – Plantur 21 Nutri-Caffeine Elixir.
