Experts claim Wills' bald spot adds eight years to his perceived age

Androgenic alopecia or male pattern baldness can strike at any age with some men experiencing it as young as their teenage years.  In Prince William’s case, he’s rapidly developed the condition over the last few years following the pattern of his father Prince Charles and his Grandfather, Prince Philip.

Not good for business

On a recent visit to a rehabilitation centre the future King demonstrated a light hearted resignation to his hair loss when he was introduced to hair stylist Taz Kabria this week.  “I don’t have much hair, I can’t give you much business”, the Prince joked.  It’s great that a future monarch can demonstrate a sense of humour about what could be an embarrassing issue given the constant gaze of the public eye.

Some men don’t find it so easy to accept hair loss though.  Our hair style is indivisibly linked with our sense of self-image so it can be hard to adapt if it starts to thin.  If it’s causing distress then the first thing to remember is that you’re not alone.  It’s not just Prince William who’s losing his hair.  A whopping 2/3 of all men will have experienced some form of hair loss by 35, the Prince’s age.

Talk to a specialist hair loss clinic

The second thing to remember is that there are treatments for the condition so it’s worth talking to a specialist hair loss clinic if you’ve noticed thinning and its bothering you.  There are medicines such as finasteride and minoxidil which can arrest the hair loss and even promote regrowth in some cases.

Hair transplants have also come on in leaps and bounds in the last few years and are no longer the exclusive preserve of the rich and famous.   Another option which men are increasingly turning to is scalp micropigmentation (SMP) which can be used to create the appearance of volume in thinning hair or a fashionable buzz cut on a completely bald scalp.

Whether you want to accept your hair loss gracefully like Prince William or want to tackle the condition head on both options are equally valid.
