Womens Hair Loss – Cause Is Crucial To Outcome

General Hair Loss

Hair loss for women follows a very different path when compared to hair loss in men.  Most is hereditary but there are many other more treatable causes, we investigate.

Hair Loss For Women – More Triggers Than The OK Corral

female hair loss

Hair loss for men, as many of our readers will understand, can start at almost any age after puberty – we receive messages from some distressingly young candidates interested in Scalp Micropigmentation as an age-appropriate solution to their problem. For women things are very different. While as many women as men will suffer hair loss at some point during their life, androgenetic alopecia (the medical term for traditional male and female pattern hair loss) does not typically present until after the menopause. Given that there a range of hard to miss symptoms of the menopause it is usually a straightforward job to associate this type of hair loss with your overall condition.

This means that for younger pre-menopausal women hair loss can usually be attributed to something other than hereditary issues. The first task is to actually spot the hair loss, which is not as easy as you might think. We typically shed around 100 hairs a day as part of the ongoing process of growth…  with each individual follicle passing through phases of growth and rest. Hair loss starts when the follicle does not kick back into it’s growth phase after one of these rest phases. The most common reason for that failure is hereditary, but as that can mostly be discounted for pre-menopausal women it is important to identify other more likely triggers… with the good news that most can be treated. Bear in mind it is hair we are talking about and so any treatment is going to take months rather than weeks, and definitely not days, to show improvement.

Seek Help At The First Sign

Common causes of hair loss for pre-menopausal women can be some very familiar experiences.. pregnancy for example, as well as surgery or sickness, trauma of any kind, including emotional. Basically anything that gives your body a shock can result in hair loss, from a simple and relatively mild thinning to extreme cases of alopecia universalis… where all body hair is suddenly treated as alien and unwanted by your body’s defence systems.

As scary and upsetting as these conditions can be they are mostly treatable in the hands of a good dermatologist. As mentioned though, progress towards the cure can be slow, almost glacial. Patience will be required and some will want to find a temporary solution to mask the issue during that extended recovery period. Hair systems are popular, if  uncomfortable. Hair extensions can help in some cases. If the problem is simple thinning of the hair along the centre parting, the most common presentation of hair loss in all women, Scalp Micropigmentation can provide the appearance of greater density… and simply disappears under the hair when it does grow back.
