Late last year we were awash with stories about the amazing results achieved by the latest hair loss cure, but has its commercial launch lived up to the hype?
The Rise Of Ruxolitinib
We first wrote about Ruxolitinib all the way back in 2014. Back then it caused a wave of excitement among hair loss sufferers when some amazing pictures were distributed of some of the volunteers on the trial. The drug had been marketed, and still is, to treat certain bone marrow disorders. Researchers were interested in its ability to block the molecular signals that take place when the immune system mistakenly attacks its own cells… which is the root cause (no pun intended) of alopecia areata – The sort of alopecia that usually presents as hair loss in random circular patches on the scalp. We were delighted to read that study was being performed on this unpleasant and upsetting condition, it can affect anyone at any age and can recur at any time so it was encouraging that science was applying itself to find a cure.
A Wave Of Optimism
We warned then, having been taken down this sort of garden path before, that the future not be quite as bright as these pictures suggested. Just the same, we would confess to being impressed. In our defence, while we knew then that the trial had been a small one, at that point only three people had been treated with the drug and most of the great results had been seen in mice, the pictures were incredible.
Fast forward two years and more results were being announced, with similar extremely high success rates to the early tests. Unfortunately, it turned out the trial had still only extended to a total of 12 people. Nevertheless, the drug is now finding its way onto the market, with limited results it has to be said. The old problem of drugs only working on a limited section of it’s target market seems to be at play, much as it is for Finasteride and Minoxidil.. to the disappointment of so many hair loss sufferers spending good money and months before realising they are doing nothing for them.
