Recent research published in the American Journal of Physiology – Heart and Circulatory Physiology also suggested that Minoxidil could be a powerful drug in the battle to prevent heart attacks.
How minoxidil could prevent a heart attack
As humans age all body tissues start to stiffen due to the gradual loss of a protein called elastin which is only produced whilst the body is still in development. This is particularly important in blood vessels. As the protein diminishes so the arteries harden making the heart work harder to pump blood to the key organs like the brain alive. The study seems to indicate that minoxidil actually replenishes some of the lost elastin which means a potential reduction in a number of conditions relating to hardened arteries including:
- High blood pressure
- Stroke
- Myocardial infarction
- Cognitive decline
- Cardiac arrest
A potential downside of the drug
Whilst this could be great news for anyone who’s losing hair and has high blood pressure there is a potential downside. If you’re suffering from low blood pressure or maybe it’s just at normal levels then there’s a possibility that it will speed up heart rate. There are reports of palpitations, ringing in ears, dark circles under eyes etc.
