GQ Magazine Reviews Hair Loss Treatments

General Hair Loss

A remarkable thing, a balanced article in a high circulation magazine reviewing hair loss and the available treatments. Worthy of a closer look we thought.

Help! I’m Losing My Hair

If you are anything like us you will spend a fair portion of your time reading articles about hair loss, or more specifically treatments for hair loss. You quickly realise that most are advertorials promoting some service or another. The focus of the article will be on the particular element of the hair loss process, there are hundreds, that their product claims to address – and in so doing will return you magically to something like your former condition.

So when GQ Magazine ran an article titled “Help! I’m losing my hair” we were pretty sure we knew what to expect… another useless addition to the list, maybe a caffeine infused laser comb with stem cell properties, designed to part you from your money.

An Early Departure

The article immediately sets out on a different course, beginning with a list of handsome bald actors and inviting the reader, if suffering from hair loss, to try not to worry. It goes on to warn sufferers from male pattern baldness, the genetically inherited form of hair loss, that there is no such thing as a cure. Written by Dr Nick Knight (not the same Nick Knight that used to open the batting for the England cricket team, we checked), a practicing family doctor, the refreshing approach, having offered a reality check on the causes of hair loss, goes on to cover the various treatments in offer in the same pragmatic and honest style.

Treatments

Alongside the usual suspects, more of that in a moment, there are a couple of pieces of advice that you do not usually see – We particularly like that Dr Knight put “Grooming” at No. 1. in his list. Embracing the situation, as he puts it, certainly makes sense if achievable. Also on his list, at No. 3, is “Watch and Wait.” As Dr Knight puts it “Sometimes the best plan in health is to do nothing. Hair loss included.”

We were, naturally, delighted to see that Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) made his list too. Albeit under the title “Scalp Tattoos” which we would flag as misleading for someone with no knowledge of what we do. But we accept that SMP is the HIS Hair Clinic’s trademark and as such possibly did not belong in an article where no product or brand is promoted.

HIS Hair Clinic

GQ reaches a lot of young men, an informative and balanced article on hair loss will be a rare thing for them. We applaud the magazine and thank Dr Knight for their contribution to improving understanding.
