Womens Hair Loss – What You Need To Know

General Hair Loss, Hair Loss News, Other Topics

Around 50% of all women will experience some form of hair loss, roughly the same number as men. For about 20% of these women the experience will be a temporary one. For the rest, some form of solution needs to be found. For a very long time the principal, almost singular, reaction would be to buy a wig. But there has never been a better range of approved and effective options available. We take a closer look.

When We Say Temporary…

It is important to bear in mind that when we speak about temporary problems that present as hair loss, that we are talking about hair. Hair recovery happens at a glacially slow rate. Most temporary conditions have a trigger that is either physical, in the form of an illness or condition (pregnancy or a very severe fever for example), or emotional. There are no hard and fast rules here, you might expect the death of a close family member or partner could tick all the boxes for such a reaction, in fact a simple split in a relationship has been known to trigger cases of alopecia totalis… where all hair and body hair is lost.  Because it is hair, while the problem can manifest very suddenly, it can take a very long time to recover. The growth cycle of any given follicle means that the process of reviving it, when added to the time taken for it to sprout a normal hair and for that hair to grow, can take 6 months or more. It is fair to say that it is necessary to live with the condition for many months before there can be any hope for a return to normality.

What Can I Do!?

Don’t worry, the short answer is plenty. The world of wigs has moved on, women now have access to incredible hair systems. But there are plenty of other excellent treatments that can help which have changed the face of women’s hair loss completely. In the world of prevention of further loss the news is that, as recently as 2014, the US Food and Drug Adminstration (FDA) approved Minoxidil in a 5% solution – prior to that, women only had access to the 2% version of this topical treatment for hair loss. Procedures like Mesotherapy and Laser therapy are also advanced and providing accelerated returns to full heads of hair.

For the majority of women hair loss sufferers the condition is permanent, something they will want to manage permanently. Scalp MicroPigmentation (SMP) is an outstanding solution for some women with mild thinning. For more advanced hair loss FUE transplantation is capable of superb results, modern techniques and typically good options for harvesting on a woman’s scalp make it an increasingly popular choice.
