As if worrying about genetics, stress, and a host of other outside factors to your hair loss wasn’t enough, now you may have to worry about the very person you trust to take car of your hair (or what’s left.)
In an article picked up on the news wire, famous Hollywood stylist Chaz Dean is being sued by six different women who claim that his WEN products, specifically the cleansing conditioner, has caused their hair to begin falling out.
Plaintiff Cindy Peterson said that her hair began falling out back in October after using Chaz Dean’s WEN products and some of the hair has yet to begin growing back. Peterson explained, “As I was shampooing my hair with it, I was noticing handfuls of hair coming out,” she said. “Because my hair was so thick, I didn’t notice it right away.” She continued to say, “I did lose about a third of my hair, which is dramatic.”
The products were a big hit among consumers of high end hair care products largely due to Dean’s name being associated with the development and creation, but also from the wide range of celebrity endorsements. Visit WEN’s website and you’ll see the likes of television actresses Alyssa Milano and Angie Harmon singing WEN’s praises. Even actress/model Brooke Shields is quoted as saying that “”WEN dramatically changed the appearance of my hair. I haven’t seen this type of shine, volume and texture since I was a young model.” That’s pretty high praise.
Last month, Dallas attorney Amy Davis named Dean and the marketing firm for WEN products Guthy-Renker in a class action lawsuit, accusing them of breach of warranty, false advertising, and negligence, to name a few.
In a statement to the press, Davis alluded to the drastic change in lifestyle for the women affected, saying, “women who used to enjoy time with family and friends out and about in social settings,…they’ve become house-bound.” Her and legal team have hired a chemist to evaluate and test the ingredients in attempt to determine what exactly is causing the hair loss.
Dean and his marketing team, however, are no strangers to being the target of lawsuits. A previous lawsuit from July by a women was amended in November, claiming that her use of the WEN cleansing conditioner ‘sweet almond mint’ caused her to lose a third of her hair. The plaintiff in this case is seeking class action status. This past October, Guthy-Renker was sued claiming that unsolicited emails claiming they were entitled to free gifts while failing to mention the gifts were contingent on some form of purchase. The appeal for this lawsuit was dismissed. Prior to that the marketing company was accused in a federal court of violating the Telephone Consumer Protection Act for contacting a woman via her cell phone. The lawsuit was reported as being possibly settled.
In a response to the most recent lawsuit, Sarah Elison, public relations manager for Guthy-Renker said the following: “We take great pride in the quality of WEN and take the appropriate steps to ensure every WEN product we sell meets our high standards. We want all our customers to have positive experiences with our products, and we encourage any customer with a question to contact us.”
But for now, this experience has been anything but positive for Peterson. “I still am a long way from where my hair should be. I don’t know if it’s coming back.”

We always encourage our clients to ask as many questions they can when it comes to SMP and that should be the case with other companies and products you may be dealing with. For now, we also recommend avoiding the WEN products until this is sorted; it could cost you more than the $30 price tag.
