What supplements can help to prevent baldness?

Hair Loss Drugs

Hair loss is brought about by many factors. Stress-related causes as well as poor nutrition and an unhealthy lifestyle can contribute to shedding. It deprives the body and in turn, the hair of its nutrients.

The most common instance however is through a genetic condition called androgenic alopecia that affects almost seventy percent of men and up to fifty percent of women. This is due to the binding of testosterone with the enzyme 5-alpha reductase to create the more potent hormone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This new hormone binds with the androgen receptors of the hair follicle acting as a barrier to the nutrient rich blood supply. It results in the shrinking of hair follicles and will eventually cause hair to be lost.

A cure has yet to be found for balding. Available methods would try to restrain it by slowing it down, conceal it or try to patch up the balding areas. This however, will not stop it in its tracks. Hair loss progresses either rapidly or gradually and is an event that is sure to come. Treatment is calibrated according to the current stage of its progression. Shampoos and concealers are used when hair loss is still in its beginning stages. Medication is available though it has potential side effects that may outweigh the prospective benefits. Hair transplant surgery can be used when the hair loss has progressed into a more noticeable state.

There have been a lot of products that claim it could prevent hair loss. This could be found in vitamin supplements with the usual ingredients such as vitamins A, B, C, D, E, K and biotin. These supplements are also sold as the main ingredients in other products such as prenatal vitamins for example. It does not need to be packaged and purchased as a special anti hair loss vitamin supplement. More importantly, this exists in certain foods and vitamin D can even be derived from the sun. Vitamin deficiency is also rare. Being deficient in certain vitamins might make one so weak that hair loss will not be the biggest concern. It would be finding a cure that is causing the sickness.

What should be done is to determine what is causing the hair loss. As previously discussed, balding can be influenced by different factors. Vitamin deficiency is only one of them. Taking vitamin supplements when one is not vitamin deficient might only be a pointless exercise. It could also cause side effects if there is an overdose of a certain vitamin. An over supply of vitamin K or potassium can induce hyperkalemia. It could lead to a disruption in the heart rhythm that may have fatal consequences. Too much vitamin C can cause diarrhea and stomach cramps. An oversupply of vitamin D could potentially damage the heart and kidneys. The list goes on regarding the potential harm that can occur with high vitamin levels. The body only takes what it needs and disposes the rest.

Remember that vitamins are not specific in its treatment for baldness. The body needs vitamins for its general functions and getting good hair is just one of them. Care must be taken when ingesting certain vitamins to make sure that the recommended daily dosage is not surpassed. Taking vitamins to address hair loss must first get clearance from a doctor to confirm if the hair loss is due to vitamin deficiency. The cause might be due to other reasons and taking vitamin supplements to treat it might be a waste of time, money and can potentially cause more harm than good.
