Can saw palmetto help to prevent hair loss?

Hair Loss Drugs

Throughout the years, both men and women have been hoping for a cure to balding. There have been creative and unique ways to do so. These came in the form of hairpieces, medication, surgery and even laser technology. Not all of the methods worked however, and some enterprising individuals took advantage of the anxiety some people felt which accompany hair loss.
The type and current state of balding should be taken into consideration when using products and services that are effective. One experiencing early hair loss symptoms can opt for shampoos and concealers to remedy their condition. This can easily be incorporated into anyone’s daily routine. Medication in the form of finasteride or minoxidil has been proven to work. These are the only drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Though having evidence that these can treat hair loss to a certain degree, the potential side effects might outweigh the benefits. Other treatments in the form of hair transplants have also been made use of. These services can curb balding to a certain degree though it would take quite a long time before the benefits can be appreciated. A waiting period of at least six months to a year would have to be endured in order to verify if the surgery was in fact, successful. There are no guarantees that continued hair loss would not result in spite of the surgery.
Saw Palmetto
Male pattern baldness is the most common occurrence of hair loss. It has been found to manifest itself in up to 70% of men throughout their lifetime. What triggers it is the combination of testosterone with the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase to form dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This new hormone fuses with the androgen receptors of the hair follicles, effectively blocking it from receiving nutrients from the bloodstream. This causes it to shrink and the hair strands to be shed. DHT is also responsible for enlarging the prostate gland or the condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
Saw palmetto is one of the known remedies that can treat both male pattern baldness and BPH. It works by effectively blocking the fusion of 5-alpha-reductase with testosterone to form DHT. With the reduction of the presence of this more potent hormone, an enlarged prostate gland has been proven to decrease in size. Following the same principles, researchers have found that it could potentially work to treat hair loss as well. There has yet to be a more comprehensive study created on the matter though taking about 200 milligrams a day for about three months revealed improvement in hair growth in six out of ten men tested.
Like any treatment, it is important to consult with a physician first to see if the current hair loss condition is being remedied appropriately. Saw palmetto may be effective where DHT is involved. There are other causes however, that bring about balding such as stress or illness that has nothing to do with DHT. Taking saw palmetto would prove to be a useless endeavor and may even lead to side effects. Though rare, ingesting this natural supplement can cause headaches and stomach pains. It may also result in excessive bleeding during surgery because saw palmetto can thin the blood. Children are not recommended to take this supplement nor should it be taken in combination with aspirin.
An exact cure has yet to be found for people experiencing hair loss and most of the current remedies that are effective also carry potential side effects. Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) on the other hand, is a reliable remedy that does not leave the patient with any harmful side effects other than a relatively short recovery period of about three days maximum. It not only addresses the hair loss condition immediately, it also lasts for a long period of time.
