Hair Loss Cure Episode XXX – A New Hope

General Hair Loss

It’s been an up and down week for Manchester but news reaches us that the latest hair loss cure has been discovered there. We look closer. Well, we would.

Manchester’s Rollercoaster Week

It is not every week your local team wins the ultra competitive English Premier League. Unless you live in Manchester that is, where United had been the preeminent team for a couple of decades and where the City side have just walked off with the title for the second time in 6 years and look set fair to stay on top for some time to come.  A signal for jubilation in the blue half of the city while in the red half they were coming to terms with a brain haemorrhage suffered by the manager who ran the club during those two incredibly successful decades. He remains in critical condition.

Like that wasn’t enough news broke one of the more remarkable hair loss cure stories of recent times, all the more interesting because it came out of one of the country’s premier learning establishments.

Hair Loss Hope

A team at the University of Manchester led by scientist Dr Nathan Hawkshaw had been researching a new treatment for osteoporosis, also known as brittle bone disease. The compound they were looking at is called WAY-316606. They discovered that it targeted a protein which acts to disrupt hair growth and seems to play a part in hair loss.

Here Come The Hairy Mice

Dr. Hawkshaw, as quoted in UK newspaper the Express, said “The fact this new agent, which had never even been considered in a hair loss context, promotes human hair growth is exciting because of its translanational potential: it could one day make a real difference to people who suffer from hair loss. He went on “Clearly though, a clinical trial is required next to tell us whether this drug or similar compounds are both effective and safe in hair loss products.”

There you have it,  the glacial rate of progress towards new drugs in a nutshell. An exciting new development will now need to be tested on mice, which if successful will see them sprout hair.. we have seen more than our share of hairy mice. Then the process can move on, if there are no negative results among the hairy mice in terms of side effects, to being tested on humans. Followed by a lot more testing on humans if the early tests go well, and when we say well we mean near perfect. The whole thing can take a very long time.

HIS Hair Clinic

We point to the authenticity of the University making the statement as a great reason to follow the progress of WAY-316606 and its variants. But we will not seriously listen to results until there is something that moves towards human clinical trial.
