Possible causes of hair loss in the eyebrows

General Hair Loss

Superciliary madarosis is what is known as the loss of eyebrows either totally or partially. It is not the condition where only a few eyebrows naturally grow. This is a state where there is an abrupt loss in eyebrow density. It may not seem to be as common as alopecia or hair loss on the scalp. This is a situation however where more than three million or so Americans have to deal with each and every year. Knowing its causes will help one handle or avoid the situation.

Chemotherapy

Side effects of this treatment would cause hair loss of the scalp and eyebrows. Cancer medications that contribute to this are bleomycin, paclitaxel, vincristine, cyclophosphamide, cisplatin and fluorouracil. These would affect the patient after about two weeks into its usage. Those afflicted with skin cancer have a higher likelihood of loss.

Alopecia Areata

This is an autoimmune disease that attacks one’s hair follicles whether located on the scalp, the face or the rest of the body. It can also result in alopecia totalis or the total loss of hair on one’s scalp. It can progress to the more severe case of alopecia universalis or the total loss of hair on the face and one’s body.

Poor Nutrition

The food one eats nourishes their hair. The amount and quality of their diet will ultimately dictate if they struggle with any hair loss situation. Vitamins and minerals are essential for healthy hair and growth. One example is the presence of sulfur in the diet. Its absence may lead to superciliary madarosis.

Excessive Eyebrow Maintenance

Plucking of the eyebrows often can result in permanent loss as a side effect. It is recommended to do this only when necessary and as sparingly as possible. The use of eyebrow make-up can also contribute to its loss. Overly brisk or sometimes forceful application, can also add to reduction in eyebrow quantities. Apply eyebrow make-up gently to preserve its integrity.

Unnatural Growth

Skin tags growing in the eyebrow area could hinder its natural structure. Warts and moles can prevent hair from going through. It can act as a blockage on the skin’s surface making the formation of eyebrow hair difficult or improbable.

Hypothyroidism

Thyroid glands that perform at a low rate characterize this condition. The accompanying symptoms to eyebrow loss comprise of weight gain, skin dryness, weakness and constipation.

Damage or Injury

Any blows, cuts or scrapes in the eyebrow area results in damage or injury. The skin may react in ways not conducive to the damaged eyebrow area. It might be difficult for it to grow back again. The scarring tissue, which develops in place of the damaged skin, is the main cause of this.

Other Causes

Fungal infections, lice and some drugs can lead to further eyebrow density loss. Scratching the area due to the infection or lice can cause trauma to your eyebrows. Drugs such as Propranolol, Prozac and Phenobarbital can contribute to it as well.

Prevent eyebrow loss

One can prevent eyebrow loss by avoiding the known causes discussed above. It is important to refrain from abusing one’s eyebrows. Constantly fussing over them can agitate its roots and lead to an increased rate of loss. Also, eat the right nutrients that help sustain a healthy eyebrow formation. It results in not only looking good but feeling good as well. Of course there are cases where eyebrow loss is inevitable when one is undergoing chemotherapy sessions.

Do what is possible to prevent eyebrow loss. Proper care and maintenance is the key. Research on eyebrow care products that enhance its natural properties.
