Your hair and the importance of self-image

General Hair Loss

As one of your most prominent physical features, your hair plays a huge role in defining how you look. But is how you see yourself more important than how you appear to others?

Self-image is directly linked to confidence and self-esteem. Most people are hugely critical of their own appearance, however any anxiety about a particular feature of yourself, be it a physical feature or a personality trait, can easily lead to a cycle of poor self-image.

In a world of gossip magazines, five minute celebrities and fame by association, the anti-aging message is constantly hammered home through just about every conceivable media channel. This has spawned a multi-billion dollar anti-aging industry consisting of creams, pills, potions, fashion items, sports cars, cosmetic surgery and of course, hair transplant surgery. In a world where money is a finite resource and under increasing pressure due to the global economic crisis, it is no surprise that men around the world are feeling low about the way they appear to others.

The merry-go-round of poor self-image

In theory, you do something about your hair loss and the anxiety goes away. This is the dream sold to unwitting punters by hair transplant surgeons, hair system specialists and pharmaceutical companies. It is important to point out that a great many people experience a huge amount of satisfaction after their transplant, unit fitting or after using Finasteride or Minoxidil, but what about those people who do not?

For an individual who is already suffering with a low self-image, further let downs can do a considerable amount of damage, both emotionally and psychologically. Pinning all your hopes on a particular drug or treatment is a dangerous strategy due to the potential fallout if things don’t work out the way you want them to. What happens if Finasteride doesn’t work, or leaves you with unacceptable side-effects? What happens if your transplanted grafts fall out and you’re left with large scars? What if your hair system is exposed? Are you willing to gamble your future happiness on something that may or may not work?

So what is the solution?

As simple as it may sound, the answer is to set a deadline – a firm date by which your hair loss issues will be resolved. Stop trying every pill, potion and procedure offered because in that state of mind, you’re simply fodder for the companies behind these products.

Instead, do your research. Speak to others who have been there and done it, and listen to what they have to say. When you are sure you know which route you want to follow, take decisive action and get it done.

To wrap up this post, I’d like to share with you an excellent forum post I read over at StevePavlina.com. It reads as follows:

“The image we have of ourselves is the most important thing in determining what we experience in the world. We spend our days acting out the kind of person we think we are, and eventually we become what we think about. We experience what we are convinced is true and so, in a very real sense, we have each created ourselves from our own mental image.”

“We can recreate ourselves from a new mental image if we choose. Whoever you are now, you have chosen it. And in a year, five years, ten years from now, you can be the same person, or you can choose again and become someone different.”
