What causes hair loss in women?

General Hair Loss

Loss of hair is not a life threatening condition but for some it is a catastrophe. Women especially are very conscious of their looks, to them it is the final part of their beauty regime. Hair is one of the first things that is noticed on a person and can help to define who they are. Loss of hair can damage self-esteem and lower self-confidence.

Keeping a good balanced diet with exercise and sleep will help to keep a good head of hair. Unfortunately there are times when loss of hair cannot be avoided. This can be due to stress, illness, shock or genetic reasons. Stress is one of the more common causes of hair loss and can be overcome. Massaging the scalp to stimulate the circulation will help to strengthen the hair follicles. Using an essential oil or produced product will leave the scalp and the hair feeling revitalised. There are many products on the market stating they will help relieve hair loss caused by stress and it is important to ensure the one used is suitable.

Alopecia areata is the name used for patchy hair loss and is usually temporary. The immune system is not working properly which affects the condition of the hair follicles. Once the illness has passed and the immune system is working again the hair follicles return to normal and the hair grows back. Although not permanent for some this can be a stressful time which in turn does not help with hair growth. Throughout an illness hair can often be seen to lack lustre and be generally limp but once the body has recovered so will the hair. It is not an overnight process and massaging the scalp can help.

Androgenetic alopecia is the name given to general female pattern baldness. With age the hair starts to thin on the top of the head and is a form of hair loss that can run in families. After the menopause it can become more noticeable as the body’s hormones change. Unfortunately the hair will not thicken and this can cause some distress. A good style haircut can help to cover the thinning patches and avoiding pulling at the hair or wearing hats can also help.

Alopecia totalis is another form of hair loss only this time as the name suggests it is permanent, the hair will not grow back. One solution to help overcome the loss of hair is the use of a wig. Over the years the look and feel of wigs has greatly improved and there is still a demand for wigs even though there are now options available such as hair transplants and plastic surgery. Hair transplants can be painful as hair is taken from the sides and back of the head and transplanted into the dying area. It is not an immediate success and it can take time for results to be seen.

The use of steroids injected into the scalp has proven successful in some cases and is not a treatment that is right for everyone. Professional advice should always be sought before considering any form of treatment. Using natural oils to massage the scalp should always be tested first on a small patch of skin to check for any adverse reactions.

Women are particularly vulnerable when it comes to hair loss. It can have a devastating effect on their life. The younger generation are noticed to have more thinning of the hair and receding hair than in earlier times. With the many celebrities competing for the latest hair fashion more elaborate styles are being worn. Unfortunately this does have an effect on the health of the hair. Tightly gripped back hair can cause the hair line to recede and more of the hair follicles are permanently damaged.

The use of hair pieces to volumise or lengthen the hair can also damage the hair follicles. The constant pulling eventually destroys them. Teenagers and young women follow fashion and copy the styles of their idols and after a few years their hair will thin. It is important to look after hair as much as it is to look after the skin to keep looking healthy and younger. A good diet and sleep are beneficial to this.
