What are hair growth boosters?

Other solutions

Hair growth boosters come in many forms and will depend on the individual as to which suits best. There are many over the counter products that claim to hold ingredients to thicken hair, give it extra shine, help with regrowth and prevention of loss. Whilst “prevention of loss” is pretty far fetched in itself, to claim that a booster can “help with regrowth” is absurd.

Hair is one of the most irrelevant parts of our body as far as health is concerned yet it is one of the most important in terms of how we look and feel. Basically, without hair our body would still be healthy unless there were illnesses that were causing the hair loss. Hereditary baldness, for instance, is not down to any health issues it is genetic and will do no harm but as said for most of us it is important for looks and feelings.

Many of these will be natural herbal products that have been used for centuries and are now coming back almost as if they are a new discovery. There is, however, no actual scientific proof but for some they do seem to work. It could be added natural ingredients that are not in the daily diet are giving that boost. Hair needs to be ‘fed’ with minerals and vitamins in order to stay healthy. If the diet is lacking or illness is preventing these reaching the hair follicles then it will cause damage.

There are just two medically approved medications to help with hair loss and regrowth and these are minoxidil for both men and women and Propecia for men. Minoxidil is applied directly onto the scalp where it can help to stimulate and encourage hair growth and Propecia that is taken orally and inhibits DHT, the male hormone known to cause hair loss. However, once these medications are stopped then so is the effect. There are only two permanent solutions for genetic or pattern hair loss, either through a hair transplant or a scalp micropigmentation procedure.

At many hair clinics medications are used alongside ‘boosters’ which are treatments made up from a clinic’s own recipe, normally minerals and vitamins that are often lacking in the body. A consultant will need to discuss lifestyle, diet, family history, illness and medications before being able to advise the best course of treatment. Another treatment sometimes recommended by clinics is a laser comb. Most are manufactured by HairMax, although they can be sold under a variety of different brands. Unlike medication it is a device that is used on the hair and scalp to stimulate hair growth.

In order for hair to be shiny and healthy it has to receive sufficient nutrients and this can be done by a well-balanced diet along with plenty of water. If the body is dehydrated it will have an adverse effect on the condition of hair as it needs moisture. The face and skin has for a long time been very important for looks and how a person feels. Women use make-up, skin moisturisers, cleansers and many new products have been developed to reduce wrinkles and bring a shine and elasticity back to ageing and poor skin. Now hair products are being produced with as much zest with many claiming to have that magic formula. There is no magic formula but that is not to say that the health of hair cannot be improved. Just like the body which can be shaped and developed through exercise so can hair be improved with health and the correct diet.

Pro-vitamin boosters are often advertised. With today’s busy lifestyles and the eating of fast foods that do not contain essential vitamins and minerals these boosters will be seen to help. There are foods that will work better for the hair than others. For instance, a diet that is high in cholesterol rich foods such as red meats is not good for the hair but greens, fish and cereal can help to strengthen it. In general nothing can take the place of a well-balanced diet but for those that do not manage this then vitamin and general health boosters will help. If there is any concern the advice of an expert should be sought as they can determine what is required.
