Using Scalp Micropigmentation to Conceal Female Hair Loss

SMP Information

An astounding number – 8 million within the UK alone – can be acknowledged for female hair loss.

The most common reasons for this (95% of cases) can be attributed to androgenetic alopecia and female pattern hair loss. There are also other cases which include telogen effluvium, anagen effluvium and other less common conditions.

There is a lot to be said for stress, and the psychological factors behind it could have some seriously adverse physical effects as well. There is research which has proven that hair loss in the slightest case leads to unease, and in more severe situations could lead to body dysmorphic disorder. This is why 60% of the interviewed sufferers have preferred hair to money and friends.

The Value of Hair Transplants

The ISHRS 2013 Census has concluded that in 2012 alone, 310, 000 surgical hair transplant operations were completed. Their total value was $1.9 billion. This statistic has caused a lot of women to go for this pricy and risky treatment. One clinic even declared an 82% increase in 2013 compared to 2011 for the same time period.

Many male hair loss sufferers find that it is incredibly effective to have a hair transplant, and this is why female sufferers have undergone this path as well. This however is not always the right choice for them. When it comes to female pattern baldness, the donor areas are typically unstable, and this is why hair transplant users may be satisfied with the results less than 10% of the time. This is due to the fact that quite commonly hair transplant areas will have the hair fall off in a short amount of time.

The SMP Alternative

There is one other alternative which has been gaining popularity in recent years among women, called scalp micropigmentation. It is also quite commonly known as SMP and it is a permanent treatment for hair loss. Originally designed for men, more women than ever before are also choosing this option to combat their thinning hair.

The treatment itself uses a special pigment which is applied using a digitally controlled needle. Unlike regular tattoos, the pigment is a special type of plant based material. The only real similarity between the two treatments is the fact that they both use needles. Due to migration, quite commonly regular tattoos will turn a bluish tint and will fade over time. Even though SMP has some fading of its own, the pigments are applied on a more shallow level and the deposits are therefore much more stable.

The best thing about SMP is the fact that it produces immediate results. SMP offers an excellent degree of concealment and definitely looks more realistic compared to other concealer products on the market. This defeats the difficulties of having to wear a wig, or always having the best possible hairstyle for the occasion, in order to cover all bald patches.

Options

Designed originally for men, scalp micropigmentation replicates a buzzed or shaved style.

Although some women like JuJu have also embraced this look, the primary application of SMP for women enables the client to keep their hair at full length, acting instead as a scalp shader to reduce the variation between the scalp and hair colour, subsequently making the whole head of hair look thicker and fuller. This option is unsuitable for those with fair or red hair.
