Keep your look fresh by protecting your scalp from harmful rays from the sun

So you’ve got a fresh new treatment, you’re looking your best and you feel a million dollars. Surely you want to keep it that way, right?

The key to long term satisfaction when it comes to scalp micropigmentation, is to take care of your treatment and get touch-ups every few years when necessary. One of the best and most important ways to take care of your pigmentation is to protect it from harmful ultraviolet rays emitted by the sun.

It is important to understand the significance of the sun, in terms of your look. Your pigment deposits will be attacked by two main foes, the sun and your own immune system. These two variables will cause your SMP to fade, although the process is extremely slow and occurs over a period of years, even decades. By using adequate sun protection, you remove one of the main causes of fading and your treatment will last much longer between touch-ups as a result.

A few considerations

Clothing is not absolute protection. Sure, most hats will provide a virtual sunblock, but don’t rely on particularly thin hats to offer the same protection.

Art galleries never hang their exhibits in a position where they will be exposed to the sun, and for good reason. Ultraviolet rays not only cause fading, but they also produce an ageing effect, and the same applies to your skin. Wrinkly, leathery skin makes a poor canvas for the very best scalp micropigmentation treatments.

Daily moisturising is really important to keep your skin healthy and nourished. Look after your skin, and your SMP treatment will stay looking good for longer.

Help keep your skin elasticated and hydrated by drinking plenty of water. This has other healthy benefits too.

What is the worst case scenario?

Putting aside the obvious health implications of spending too much time in the sun without protection, the truth of the matter is that however you choose to adapt your lifestyle (or not as the case may be) to enable adequate sun protection, its not the end of the world if your pigments fade quicker than they otherwise would have done.

It may mean, for example, that you need a touch-up treatment in 5 years time, whereas your counterpart who took all the right precautions may not need one for 6 years. The difference is relatively minor. On the other hand, you may consider slapping on some suncream a good overall investment in your pigmentation, and your health.
