Matte products and MHT

SMP Information

There has been a lot of discussion on our forum recently about the benefits of matte cleansers, moisturisers and other matte products for MHT clients.

So what exactly is a ‘matte’ product?

In brief, a matte product is one that is designed to prevent the production of sebum. Sebum is naturally secreted by the skin, and is what causes the skin to shine. A shiny head can be experienced by men with or without hair, and with or without an MHT treatment. Even men with a full head of hair can experience scalp shine.

Before we go any further, let me point out that a shiny head is not always considered a bad thing, in fact products like HeadLube Glossy from HeadBlade are actually designed to increase the level of shine, but that’s a subject for another post.

For the majority of HIS clients, the main aim is to reduce the emphasis on their heads, not to accentuate it. For this reason, many choose to use a ‘matte’ product of some description to combat the shine. If effective, the result is a non-shiny scalp that reflects as little light as possible.

So what matte products are recommended?

HIS Hair Clinic does not recommend any particular product, as the best product differs from person to person. The most popular products discussed on our forum are as follows:

Loreal MenExpert Pure & Matte

Pure & Matte is actually a range of skincare products including exfoliating facial cleaners and moisturisers.

The main product of interest here is Loreal MenExpert Pure & Matte moisturiser, as this is the product gaining the most attention in our forum.

The general consensus is that this is a great product. From personal experience I can confirm it is non greasy and feels very light. It certainly does its job as a moisturiser very effectively. The matte effect tends not to last all day, but it does compare favourably with rival products.

More information about this product can be found on LorealMen.com. The MenExpert range is available from a variety of online retailers, including Amazon and Ebay.

HeadBlade HeadLube Matte

HeadLube Matte from head shaving supremos HeadBlade already has a loyal following on our forum, with many of our clients swearing by it.

The product is much more easily accessible to our American clients, however HeadBlade do offer international shipping options now, making it easier to get hold of the product if you live elsewhere.

I have no personal experience with HeadLube Matte, but the reviews I see are all positive. You can learn more about the product on the HeadBlade website.

If you’re not already familiar with HeadBlade, you really need to check out their range of head shaving razors.

Specifically designed for men who shave the scalp, their finger-operated blades have gained a lot of media attention, and the approval of many high profile celebrities around the world.

Amie Morning Dew Matte-Finish Moisturiser

I’ve lost count of how many clients visiting our Birmingham clinic have mentioned this product. It seems that many of our clients have been raiding their wives/girlfriends make-up cabinets.

Although not specifically designed for men, this matte moisturiser is apparently highly effective on MHT-finished scalps. All the comments I’ve heard have been positive, and it is apparently also very pleasant to use.

Amie Morning Dew may also be popular amongst those clients looking for a natural solution, as the product claims to be made using 90.8% natural ingredients.

More information about the products eco/natural credentials can be found on this page, but basically includes no parabens, mineral oils or petrochemicals.

Further information about this product can be found here, and it can be purchased from many online retailers and retail chemists.

Milk Of Magnesia

Yes, you did read the above correctly. Good old fashioned Milk Of Magnesia is a recent discovery that many of our clients now swear by, and has established itself firmly at the top of the list of most favoured products!

Milk Of Magnesia is actually a traditional remedy for constipation. It is important to point out that this product is in no way intended or designed as a skincare product, and HIS cannot recommend the product for this purpose. However its reputation and strength of its reviews are undeniable.

A forum thread containing information about its use as an MHT aftercare product, including advice regarding its application can be found here. Just make sure you buy the Original flavour, as most that are sold are Mint flavour, and could give your scalp an unwanted fragrance!

Another great benefit of Milk Of Magnesia is that it is very cheap in comparison to regular moisturisers. The most popular brand seems to be Phillips, more information about which can be found on this page.

There are several discussions in our forum regarding matte products. Three recent threads are as follows:
