The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) is a non-profit voluntary organization of over 700 hair restoration doctors, specializing in alopecia and hair loss.
It was founded in 1993 as the first International society to promote continuing quality improvement and education for professionals in the field of medical hair restoration surgery.
The ISHRS provides continuing education to physicians specializing in hair transplant and restoration surgery and gives the public the latest information on medical hair restoration and non-surgical treatment for hair loss.
The ISHRS mission is to advance the art and science of hair restoration by licensed, experienced physicians who are qualified to practice this type of medicine and who do so with the highest degree of skill and artistry.
They encourage the free interchange of ideas, knowledge and experience among members who aim to maintain their skills and artistry to the highest possible level. The ISHRS encourages professional excellence and promotes amicable relations among members. The ISHRS also aim to provide the latest information and news on the topic of hair restoration surgery to the general public.
Criticism of the ISHRS
Unfortunately not everyone is convinced of the organisations unbiased position. There are those who believe the Society is both run by and on the payroll of doctors, researchers and the major pharmaceutical companies.
Its not really for us to say, in fact we dont really have an informed view on the matter. We do know however that much of their criticism is due to their apparent support for hair loss drug Propecia, despite controversy surrounding its potential side effects.
