male pattern baldness

male pattern baldnessMale pattern baldness or androgenic alopecia affects half the male population by the time they reach 50 so it’s hardly a rare condition.  Despite its frequency it can still damage self esteem with up to 60% of men in the UK reporting feelings of insecurity after losing hair.

Don’t suffer in silence

The main thing to remember is that you’re not the only person with the problem and you don’t have to suffer in silence.  Of course, if you can embrace the physical change then that’s great but if you’re one of the majority of men who feel that it’s affecting their confidence there are some options:

  1. Hair systems. Wigs are still an option although they’re high maintenance.  In some cases it’ll be the only way of maintaining the look of a full head of hair.
  2. Hair transplants. Once the preserve of the rich and famous the transplant is now becoming more common.  Whilst it’s still an expensive options the results are more or less guaranteed due to improvements in technique and technology.  Remember it is still invasive surgery though it’s not actually replacing lost hair, just moving existing hair around.  It only works if you have enough left to start with.
  3. Hair loss drugs. Finasteride and Minoxidil are two options for people who want to slow hair loss or stop it in its tracks.  I can be a great option for many men but it only works as long as you’re taking the drug.  As soon as you stop the hair loss will resume.
  4. Scalp Micropigmentation. This is an increasingly popular option with many men.  Unlike a hair transplant it’s non invasive and relatively cheap.  It’s virtually zero maintenance (and you won’t get caught out) unlike a hair system and it doesn’t have the ongoing cost and commitment of finasteride and minoxidil.
