There has been a lot of study into how the environment can cause hair loss in some people. The environment is forever changing and depending on where a person lives it can determine how healthy the hair is
A researcher by the name of Mike Philpott from the University of London has been looking into the connection between the environment and hair loss.
Mike believes that pollution from the environment can get into the bloodstream and cause damage to the hair and follicles. The toxins and carcinogens in the environment have a generally detrimental effect on the body, and living in a city environment can have more of an effect than country living. The fumes from car exhausts are a major factor in built up areas.
Hot and cold climates
Living in a tropical climate can cause hair loss. The sun will dry the hair leaving it brittle and over time the hair will keep breaking. There are products on the market to help overcome this, keeping the hair moisturised is important as well as massaging the scalp to help with circulation. Over exposure to the sun can burn the scalp if not covered. Once the hair follicles have been burnt the damage could be irreversible. The sun causes skin to become thin prematurely and this happens on the scalp if care is not taken.
Cold winters can also have an adverse effect on the condition of hair. The cold and the damp and the wet is constantly subjecting hair to different conditions. The hair has to be strong to be able to cope with the different changes. A healthy diet will promote the nutrients and vitamins to reach the scalp which helps the hair follicles to remain healthy. Many use hats in the winter months as it is well known that a lot of heat is lost through the head and wearing a hat is recommended. However, wearing a hat for any length of time can cause hair damage. To keep a good head of hair under any conditions requires constant care and use of suitable hair products.
Air conditioning is yet another environmental factor that can have an adverse effect on the hair. It dries the air and can dry the hair taking away the moisture that is necessary for healthy hair. Using a good moisturiser for the hair will help to compensate and should be used every day. Unfortunately for many air conditioning cannot be avoided but good hair care will help. The hair is subject to extreme conditions, cold dry air from the air conditioning inside and outside hot air and sun.
Unfortunately there is not much that can be done to the environment on a day to day living basis but looking after the body and hair can help overcome some of the effects. Using a good quality shampoo and conditioner suitable for hair type can certainly help. There are products on the market that will help with dry and brittle hair that can be caused by exposure to the sun. Ensuring a good supply of minerals and vitamins to the hair follicles is vital and a good healthy balanced diet is essential for this.
For most, hair is an important part of how others see us. Loss of hair can cause embarrassment and loss of self-confidence. Finding the cause of hair loss is important as there are a number of factors that can contribute to it and the environment can play a small part.
