Four Ways Coconut Oil Can Help Hair Loss

General Hair Loss

Coconut oil is remarkable, positively brimming with helpful, healthy ingredients that can do so much for the condition of our hair. We look closer.

Coconut Oil

We are constantly pointed towards foods described as “superfoods” that are attributed with all manner of beneficial properties. Coconut oil is a definitive superfood that requires no hyperbole to present itself as a must-have when it comes to hair health.

Packed with antioxidants and fatty acids it can help fight off bacteria, viruses, and fungal diseases. But that is not where it list of benefits ends. Here are four reasons why we should all consider adding coconut oil to our regime.

Promotes Hair Growth

The lauric acid present in coconut oil can penetrate the hair shaft to improve hair health, leading to faster growing and thicker hair over time. In addition, the presence of omega-3 fatty acids, in their natural form rather than through a supplement, is also credited with benefiting the internal processes involved in a healthy follicle.

Protects Against Dandruff

Take a quarter teaspoon of coconut oil, half a spoon for longer hair, and rub it between your hands to warm it. After shampooing, apply it gently to the hair and leave for an hour or two before rinsing off. A simple, cheap, and effective way of combating this itchy dry skin condition.

Sun Protection

A review in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition credited coconut oil with properties that can protect the hair from the harmful effects of UV radiation in sunlight.

Breakage Protection

Adding coconut oil as part of your grooming routine, slotting it in after the shampooing has finished, is a good way to help prevent breakage. The Journal of Cosmetic Science tells us that damaged hair is a result of protein loss, where the overuse of harsh chemicals contained in bathroom products reduces the number of lipids on the hair surface.  This, in turn, affects the structure of your hair and leads to dull, unhealthy hair. The lauric acid in coconut oil penetrates the shaft to repair damaged hair.
