Can a tooth infection cause hair loss?

General Hair Loss

Pain can be a shock to the system as it tries to fight the cause of the pain and toothache is no different

Hair loss can be down to several different factors. Genetic or pattern hair loss is hereditary and if in the family there is a good chance that hair will be lost at some point in life and can be as early as the late teens. It affects both male and female although the male loss is more dramatic. Today there are treatments to help stem the loss and even help with regrowth but once the treatment stops so does the regrowth. There is also hair transplants which are a permanent solution. The sooner treatment starts the better the success.

Other hair loss can be down to the condition of the body and mind and environmental factors. Loss is not normally permanent as once the condition has been treated hair will begin to grow again. Hair can start to thin for no apparent reason and it is often a sign that there is something wrong within the body. When the body’s systems are fighting infections and illnesses they will send the nutrients to the major organs such as the heart and liver which are needed to survive. The skin, from which hair grows, is the largest organ but is the least important and so when there is a shortage of nutrients or they are needed elsewhere it will be deprived. This is when a difference can be noticed in the condition of hair.

Tooth infections can be very painful and easily spread around the mouth. The body will automatically detect there is an infection and fight it. Whilst this is happening the rest of the body can be affected including the hair. Again, the hair follicles will be the last to receive nutrients which may be depleted by then as the infection is being fought. Diet plays an important part in the welfare of the body and mind and if unable to eat due to the pain then the daily intake of vitamins and minerals will not be eaten and this too will affect the system.

The chances of a large hair loss is unlikely as the infection, when treated, is usually over relatively quickly and will not upset the hair cycle too much. It would take a few days for the loss to be seen by which time the body would be back to ‘normal’. Sleep is also a help when the body is fighting infections as it helps to rejuvenate and is nature’s way of ensuring it can cope each day.

Taking care of the hair from both the inside and outside will prepare it for sudden upsets to the body when there may not be enough nutrients to go round. A well-balanced diet is always a good start as it helps keep the body and mind fit and active. Vitamins and minerals are needed daily and for some they may need to take supplements to add to their diet. Exercise is another important factor.

Washing the hair regularly with a good shampoo and conditioner will help to strengthen the hair. They should contain no harsh chemicals that can strip the hair of its natural oil, sebum. There are many products on the market that state they can stop hair loss, help regrowth etc. but this is not necessarily true, care should be taken before using. Hair clinics are very good for advising and getting to the root of hair loss problems and when there is doubt as to why hair is thinning they should be used.

There are two medically approved treatments that can help prevent hair loss and help with regrowth. Minoxidil can be used by both men and women and can help by dilating the blood vessels around the hair follicles allowing more nutrients in. Propecia can only be used by men over the age of 18 and helps by prohibiting DHT which is known to destroy hair follicles. These can be used in conjunction with other hair boosters and have shown to be successful not only for those with genetic hair loss but also after losing hair through surgery, shock, illness etc.
