Are Grapes Good For Hair Loss?

General Hair Loss

The not so humble grape has found it’s way into a hair loss product, but what are the merits of grapes for hair loss. We look closer.

Grapes Are Good For You!

Well, in many circumstances that is absolutely true, it has certainly been our friend for a very very long time. Grapes have the marvelous good fortune to have yeast grow naturally on their skin. It means that humans did not have to “discover” wine through any inspired process of trial and error, they simply had to wait for someone to drink the juice of over-ripe grapes and the rest, as they say, is history. The earliest records of grape cultivation, by which we mean a community where making wine was the principal activity, goes back to between 6000 and 8000 years ago in Georgia… no not that one, the one in Eastern Europe. The first winery is believed to be around 6000 years old and was discovered in Armenia.

Grapes grow on woody vines that shed their leaves in winter. In the summer they produce huge quantities of berries… the grapes. They come in different colours and taste varies hugely, though sometimes subtly, according to the variety of grape, the soil, how they are cared for, how much sun and/or rain there is that season.

Grapes as Food

As part of a diet grapes are fairly benign, not to say healthy even. They contain only trace amounts of anything you might want to avoid and a serving can provide 5% of your daily potassium and Vitamin C intake. They are also credited with possessing high levels of antioxidants. Antioxidents are spoken of in hushed tones by some health food addicts, they believe that they protect against “free radicals,” a by-product of breathing as the oxygen is  processed through our system. These free radicals are supposed to damage the DNA at the heart of every living cell and over time cause what we call ageing. The theory is unproven, and some recent research has significantly holed it below the waterline, but in the meantime grapes are offered as a good source. Of something that we have no real understanding of.

And So To Hair Loss

We imagine it took the proverbial New York minute between someone saying “… so if antioxidants slow the ageing process it could be argued they prevent hair loss” and somebody else saying “so we can put grape seed extract into a shampoo and market it for hair loss.”

HIS Hair Clinic

We won’t bother naming the brand and giving them free airtime, but be on the lookout for hair loss shampoo with grape seed extract, and let us know how you get on if you choose to use it. Though we have a sneaky suspicion we already know.
